  ARRIVAL TERMINAL-1

Today we left the hotel at 8:30 to go to ICBF for one last set of papers and then to the Embassy to apply for Cole’s visa.  Everything went fine at ICFB, we got the form we needed and headed to the US Embassy for the very last step of obtaining Cole’s Visa.  It started smooth at the Embassy, but quickly went downhill when a lady talking to us through a glass window asked us for our updated FBI fingerprint clearance.   She indicated the one we had was expired.  As you can imagine, anxiety and stress quickly took over.  We politely told the lady that we were leaving Wednesday and we really needed this to get completed.  Her response was, “you are not going anywhere until I get your updated fingerprint authorization.”  She let us know we had until 2:30 today to get her the information.  Thankfully, Leah had the information we needed, but it was on our computer back at the hotel.  After a few stressful hours, we were back at the Embassy with the needed documents in our hand and the process complete.  We were told we can pick up Cole’s Visa tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3:30.    What a relief!!!!!!  As long as it is ready to go, we will be ready to fly Wednesday morning.  We can’t wait to touch ground in good old USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Colombia has been good to us, but there is no where like home and the people that love you!  We can’ wait to see you all!

A Few More Days in Bogota

Yesterday was a long day with getting Cole’s passport, visiting the Embassy Doctor and having our exit interview at Ayudame.  We will have the weekend to rest and then Monday morning we go to ICBF to get some last minute papers and then it’s off to apply for Cole’s visa.  We can pick up the Visa on Tuesday after 3:00.  We have to leave Hotel Paris by 4:30 am on Wednesday in order to make our flight at 7:55 am.  We are supposed to land in Minneapolis at 6:30 pm!  We are very anxious to see everyone and to introduce you to Cole.

The exit interview at Ayudame was quick.  We didn’t get a tour of the orphanage, but they asked us if they could take Cole upstairs to where he used to sleep.  We could hear all of the older children say “it’s Juan David”.  They remembered him!  I wonder what was going through Cole’s mind at that moment.  When they came back downstairs with him a little girl followed.  She must have been about 4 and was the sweetest thing!  She took my hand and that was it….I wanted to bring her home.  I would bring them all home if I could.

Sundays are different around here.  The pictures of the streets full of people biking and walking are taken on a Sunday.  This is the day for families to get out and exercise.  It’s a nice break from all of the heavy traffic.  Sunday’s are very enjoyable in Bogota.

We will miss the staff at Hotel Paris.  They have been so good to us.  They truly love children, as you can see from the pictures.  Juanita is the cook and had a special relationship with Joe!  Valeria is the manager and had a special relationship with Cole and would sing him nursery rhymes in Spanish.  I wish we could bring them home with us as well.  They have done all of our cooking, cleaning, and laundry for the last 4 weeks.  We have gotten SPOILED!

SENTENCIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We signed SENTENCIA this morning!  It was an emotional experience.  COLE IS LEGALLY OURS!  We were so blessed to have a judge who is very supportive of adoption.  He made signing the Sentencia very special and he even wrote us a letter from Cole (in Spanish so I will have to get it translated).  All of the office staff came to see Cole and to get their picture taken with him.  We had cake and Coke and visited the best we could with the language barrier.  He asked us if we would send information to him about the University of Minnesota as his son is looking to go to school there.  He also asked if he could stay at our house when he comes to Minnesota.  Ha!  Very nice man.

After the Sentencia was signed we then went to register for Cole’s new birth certificate.  We had to go to a special bank across town to pay for the certificate, after that we went to have his passport and Visa pictures taken.  It was a long day for him, but he did very well and is now taking a long afternoon nap.  Tomorrow we pick up the birth certificate, Friday we get the passport and see the doctor, Saturday and Sunday we wait, Monday we apply for the the Visa, Tuesday we have our exit interview with Ayudame and pick up our Visa, and  WEDNESDAY WE FLY HOME!!!!!!!!  (That is if everything happens the way it is supposed to with no glitches)

Cole at Ayudame

I am not a good writer, and I apologize for that, but I want to try to explain the picture I am going to post with this.

The kids on the floor belong to our friends.  They adopted all three of their children (at different times) from Ayudame.  This was their presentation picture from when they were given their little girl.  They took the picture not knowing there was someone else in the background.  When we arrived they took us under their wing and showed us around Bogota and told us what to expect.  We shared our picture of Cole with them the day we arrived because we were so excited for our presentation day.  They then showed us a picture from their presentation and thought the child in the background look like our child.  Sure enough it was!  I look at the picture and wonder what was going through his little mind as he watched his friend leave with her new family.  Little did he know that we were days away from changing his life forever and him changing ours.
